Wonderful affordable art

These posters from Sonnenzimmer completely blow me away. They're clever and quiet and beautiful and make terrific use of space and typography. Based in Chicago, Sonnenzimmer is the design partnership of Nick Butcher and Nadine Nakanishi.



Their client list includes some of my favourite bands, and most posters are available at their online store for roughly $40.

Since no one I will be giving presents to this Christmas reads this blog, here's a preview of what some of them will be getting!

For my boy, who is fiendishly clever with puzzles (though maybe not so much with the ladies). I got him the Enigma puzzle which at Level 6 is meant to be pretty darn infuriating. From the clever kids at ThinkGeek.

Saw this while I was at ThinkGeek and I couldn't pass it up! This'll save the boy from having to get out of bed to turn the lights off. It comes in pieces, and half the fun will be putting together our big 3-D dinosaur puzzle.

I'm extra pleased about these plates up here! The ones I got say Mutant, Jerk, and Hussy and they're perfect for their intended recipients. This Christmas will either be really funny or end in fisticuffs, both of which I consider excellent options. I think I'm hoping for a bit of both. Pretty things for the pretty girls in my life. The new range of MOR soaps are packaged so well, I don't really care what they smell like. (Ok I do, and thankfully they smell great) I wonder if packaging designers are aware of how they can make the actual product fairly irrelevant if the outside's fancy enough. Home 2.0

It's the end of the year again, which means it's time to pack up and move into my third house in four years. I like the constant moving (besides the actual act of shifting and cleaning and wondering how to hide the sunscreen stains on the carpet from the landlord); it's fun having to work with an entirely new space every year. So in less than a month I should be in my new house (ok, room) in the city! I'm going minimal this time, which is what I say everytime, but this year that means I'm getting a single bed and a metal rail for a wardrobe.I like these simple, stark beds by IKEA. Cheap and easy to move for the next time round.


Or I could go with this ingenious stacked cardboard bed, found via a NYT article on students decorating on a ramen budget. It's filled with inspiring and really practical ideas on how to make a space your own.


I've been lusting after these sheets for a long while now, and I'm glad I didn't cave in and get them before because they are now on SALE.

So hopefully with a lot of white, and the downsizing of my sleep-space, I should be able to manage something like this! More room for dancing and attempted pilates workouts off YouTube videos!

Designed by Josef Frank and available here. I won't even bother converting those prices to dollars to see how much it costs. Hell if this here lamp and that there cupboard never end up in my living room, at least they're up here making my blog look pretty.

Clothes that hug you back. Clothes that you can build forts out of. Clothes in which you can convincingly pretend you have no arms or head. All excellent qualities. This cloak by Lindsey Thornburg looks like it would be so much fun to wear. It makes me want to jump out of trees and scare joggers.
